Two suspected Pakistani militants shot dead in India January 26, 2009 -- Updated 0530 GMT (1330 HKT) NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- Two terror suspects were killed in a shootout early Sunday on the outskirts of New Delhi, according to Indian police. Gurbachan Lal, inspector general of police in the Uttar Pradesh, which borders the Indian capital, told CNN that one of the suspects identified himself and his companion as Pakistani nationals before he died on the way to a hospital. Police seized two AK-47 rifles, four magazines, five grenades and explosives from them, Lal said. A police officer was also injured in the encounter at Noida, according to Lal. India is on a state of high security alert for Monday's Republic Day celebrations. Republic Day marks India's adoption of a constitution and its transformation to a sovereign state on January 26, 1950. India and Pakistan both gained independence from British rule in 1947. In the past, India has blamed Pakistan for attacks inside its soil, a charge that Pakistan has repeatedly denied. Most recently, the Indian government said a three-day siege in Mumbai in November was carried out by Lakshar-e-Tayyiba, a Pakistan-based outfit. The series of coordinated attacks on hotels, hospitals and railway stations in the country's financial capital killed more than 160 people, including many foreigners. The accusations renewed tensions between South Asia's longtime rivals, who have fought three wars since independence and conducted nuclear weapons tests against each other in 1998.
