What strikes me as weird is that it wasn't transferred to the wife's revocable trust, that would be pretty standard estate planning and would provide some legitimacy to the transfer if it is challenged.

I've used estate planning to evade creditors before, bankruptcy lawyers call it a fraudulent conveyance, I call it avoiding probate.
