Ahhhhhh, our WWII generation....Aren't they wonderful? They in so many ways were so much tougher than we are, and certainly tougher than our own kids are, by in large.... The WWII folks grew up either during or right after WWI, then the Great Depression, then WWII....they raised their kids as best they could, and most of us turned out to be responsible and productive citizens. My guess is, your FIL even though he could afford to have someone go up on the roof, was of the generation I spoke of and wanted to save money and do it himself!
