Lenovo bought Thinkpad from IBM. Asus, and MSI have been making whitebox notebooks for several years. They often get rebranded by smaller "manufacturers". ACER has ad a less sterling reputation, but is certainly a good value. FWIW, I still do not own a laptop, notebook or similar device. I have a PDA I used for a couple years until I left my job. It synched with my corporate email which was super handy. I used it to post on SI two years ago when I was at a church conference.
