I wouldn't describe Shepard as someone who has a fear of God. He refuses to consider the fact that somethings are purposeful and meaningful beyond himself. I might be willing to concede that he has some sort of anticipatory fear fo faith, and so he blocks all lines of thought and communication that might open him up to such an experience.

Normally, a genuine fear of God involves the fear of what might happen if one fails to hold on to love for virtue and faith ... the desolation of hopelessness in this life and possible eternal consequences for using free will to choose evil. For believers it is seen as a motivating force to hang in there. Anticipatory fear, is the fear of being overwhelmed with fear if a particular circumstance presents itself. In Shepard's case a fear of being afraid, the ultimate faithless coward. He is afraid of what might happen if he did fear God, and expresses it as self hate as much as he does as hate for the rest of us.

I thought a fear of God is how you are indoctrinated as a child and it stays with you though adulthood.... You are a god fearing person, aren't you????

Now, how can I fear something I don't think exists??
