Ted, > But what's lost is the vested interest in the community that mom and pop stores have.

That's true, but with the push toward mass transit, small communities may be a thing of the past. We'll all be urbanized whether we like it or not.

There are mom and pop stores in cities but usually only in the poor areas. However, they used to be all over. The chains have pushed most of them out in the better areas.

Its happening in my neighborhood right now. There is a popular supermarket that provides more specialty items than a typical supermarket. Its also pricy. Its part of a small group of 5 stores. And its a valued member of the community.....whenever they do anything to the store it ends up upgrading the neighborhood because they do such a nice job. Plus, they have special events at the store that makes for a more interesting market.

Well, W. Seattle has become more popular [since I moved here] in the last ten years. <g> Incomes are going up and the population has grown. Even so, I think there are more than enough supermarkets in the area. However, not everyone agrees.........there are two more supermarkets plus a Whole Foods store opening up. I really fear for the 'mom and pop' supermarket. They will not be able to compete pricewise and will probably close. People will gain because they save money but I am not sure the community won't lose.
