I went to a public school where a student was actually shot and killed by another student (quite a bit after I attended, back then we just used fists and whatever implements were at hand), it really makes you think when a kid gets killed in the spot where you used to wait for the ride home.

There are places in Florida where the public schools are good but if I had kids I would never take that chance, the other attorney in my office is paying 14k a year for his 6 year old to attend a private school.

There's no upside to a child becoming accustomed to violence or the threat of violence ... you can argue that it "toughens them up" or makes them more comfortable in the "real world" but really all it does is give them an ingrained, instinctive reaction to certain people, it creates a bias that you can never be rid of even if you try.
