The article also said that the study tracked 320k men, a third of whom had served in the military:

I read that part before my initial response. Its not really relevant, it doesn't show that they are not comparing males to non males. The other part, the part I also quoted later - "Male U.S. veterans are twice as likely to die by suicide than people with no military service" does, but its a questionable assertion given the points raised in my other responses.
