Yes, they started to take it over in response to a series of Arab invasions.

They probably made a mistake taking over Gaza. It wasn't as strategically useful as the West Bank, was more densely populated, and otherwise has been even more of a headache then the West Bank. But under the circumstances the move was understandable, even if a mistake.

Then they pull out, and the Palestinians choose to attack Israel rather than try to build a populous and peaceful new nation.
