I remember the "ownership society", when almost all businesses were owned by locals.

The question wasn't about ownership, but about how much employees where paid. "Mom and Pop" stores have never been known to pay their employees very well.

It would seem to me that a classic libertarian would be more in favor of the small businessman than the giant corporation.

Libertarianism would be against the government being in favor of either of them, the market would sort it out.

Interventionist government often supports the giant corporations, as they have more political influence.
