It covers up to 5,000 square feet, the company said Monday.

Unless my memory of geometric calculation is wrong (and it could very well be distorted/mistaken) this comes out to a circle with about a 40 foot radius. This doesn't seem too bad for a private home, but may lend phone service to the neighbors in an apartment.

So if I was in China and I had my little femtocell with me, could I hook it up to a broadband connection and use my phone?

Or do you think they check IP's?

Probably, but that would be fun.

Actually, that would be easy to get around with a proxy. So there has to be other stuff that keeps it from being abused by your friendly neighborhood kidnappers, terrorists, etc...
