Mine are redder too. At one time there was a difference between the redder leather and the dark brown. Redder was elk tanned and brown was oil tanned. The latter was reputed to be more water resistant, but I never had a pair like that and always kept mine greased up.

The rubber is better than that you find on some boots, and rarely punctures. It just keeps wearing thinner and thinner until you get through the interior.

They are not good on slick slopes, however. For hunting, I prefer my Sorels, which have a Vibram-like tread.
