To be fair, we all tend to hire people who are just like us, or who (at least) seem "reasonable"- which means (to everyone I've ever seen on SI or anywhere else) they pretty much agree with us.

It's probably very hard to go out seeking people who are very different in values from yourself.

If we really cared about hiring the best people we'd figure out (as objectively as possible) who the best employees are, and then develop a test to find people like that- in terms of intelligence, and ability.

It's hard for folks like Hoover, or Cohn, or other people who are trapped in a social group/political movement that is conservative and anti-choice in terms of options for sexuality- when they obviously have needs that are out of the mainstream. Obviously people don't pick their party always on the basis of what best fits their sexual needs- so people who gravitate toward a political party that can't accept their private predilections are doomed to be sneaky hypocrites.
