Still don't, although nowadays in London there's an armed response a few minutes away at all times.

Until I came to the US, the only place I'd ever even seen a gun was on holiday in Europe.

The Italian and Spanish police like to flaunt machine pistols, but I think its more testosterone related than because it's necessary.

You will see armed police every so often at the airports,RR stations and around town every so often, At least I did in the nineties. I even heard one of the IRA blasts a couple of blocks from where I was living, but they always gave notice. Still a great and safe city
