Off topic: HH, you are right. My only experience on a mainframe was an "intro to computers" course in college. That consisted of Fortran and then assembler on a Burroughs mainframe. Worthless.

I recall standing in line at the punch card thingie patiently waiting my turn, laboriously typing each one, standing in line to run them through the card reader, waiting an hour for my printout, finding out I made a typo, and repeating the process all night. Yuck.

I joke to TED that to us PC programmers, you mainframe types are considered "dinosaurs". PCs to you guys are, of course, considered "toys".

I've been using compilers, linkers, debuggers, etc for 15 years on PCs, which means I understand the mainframe stuff in theory, but, naturally, not in practice. I actually have made my living on my expertise in programming in arcane printer languages like PCL and Postscript. I'm told upwards of 60 million insurance forms are printed each year using my code... if only I got paid a royalty on each one (gg). Alas, no retirement for me. :^(

Woody Allen once said "life is what happens to you while your're busy making other plans". It has no relevance to what I just said, but I've always wanted to end a post that way.
