Palestinians want their freedom. Their own leadership gets in the way of that, in two ways. 1 - To the extent Hamas or Fatah is in control of an area where Palestinians live, the Palestinians don't get freedom, because Hamas and Fatah don't care much about freedom, and don't give it to the people. 2 - In terms of independence rather than liberty - When Hamas, got control of some land, and autonomy (not independence/sovereignty, but it was a big step in that direction), they used it to attack Israel. If one believe that the Palestinians should have an independent state, and the response to a step in that direction is violence and destruction, then its understandable why Israel doesn't keep going in that direction. Hamas had a good chance to start building instead of destroying, to start gaining trust instead of distrust, and they blew it. 3 - Hamas still calls for the destruction of Israel. Until it rejects that idea both formal words, and by its actions, Israel would be insane to grant Hamas a fully independent and sovereign state with no Israeli control. 4 - Hamas doesn't even want a Gaza state, or "the '67 borders", except as a stepping stone to more. It wants control over all the land including Tel Aviv.
