The picture you paint leaves us with no choice.

Hence this is what we do:

Sheep follow they do not lead. Since we are sheep,by design,we can only follow. The Shepards have led the flock astray and we can only follow. We can complain all we want;Baaaaaaaa...baaaa,it matters none. The Shepards decide our fate and pay no heed to our wantan cries. When the Shepards get that uneasy feeling in their loins-we bend over.

They could accomplish the same f*****in' thing if they would just abandon FASB 157 and not force the banks to mark their crap to market. If they would suspend that rule until the economy recovers (whenever that may be) the banks wouldn't have to worry about raising more capital to maintain their reserve requirements and could start lending the money they've been having to hoard. Best thing is that it wouldn't cost us untold billions to accomplish the same thing.
