the cdn diplomats working for the UN who disappeared a few weeks back had just visted their mine in Niger.....2008-12-19 08:36 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that two Canadians on a UN mission to Niger visited a Canadian-operated gold mine unannounced on the day they disappeared in Niger. The Globe's Campbell Clark writes UN special envoy Robert Fowler and Canadian aide Louis Guay have not been heard from for four days, since their car was found on the road Sunday night, with cellphones, a camera and a jacket still inside. The two were in the country on a low-profile UN mission to explore the possibility of peace talks between the government of President Mamadou Tandja and Tuareg rebels. A splinter group of rebels, the Front des Forces de Redressement, claimed responsibility for kidnapping them in a website posting on Tuesday, but later denied involvement. A spokesman for Montreal's Semafo confirmed reports that Mr. Fowler and Mr. Guay visited the Samira Hill gold mine and left hours before they disappeared. Semafo's Jean-Paul Blais said it is common for Canadian dignitaries to visit the mining site if they are in Niger, but there was no indication the trip to a mine, in a secure area, had anything to do with their UN mission. "It was like a protocol visit, and it was treated like that by us."
