Hi Rex,

I think this is the story you're referring to:
sandisk.com

You're right, I think it makes sense to expand that fab in Taiwan rather than build a new one.

I read through some stories about the patents that Sandisk got. They covered some very fundamental things like page update in flash (with flash, you have to update a page at a time, unlike RAM which you can update one byte at a time), and how flash disk can be used as DOS disk. I don't know about the other patents, but those two things I just mentioned are very very fundamental. Man, it's like getting a patent on arithmetic calculation in a microprocessor, or patent on nail used to build houses. With this kind of patenting, Sandisk is gonna to collect money left and right from flash manufacturers. And they're asking for more than 10% royalty (industry standard is about 3%-5%).

[OFF TOPIC to Rex]
I am lucky to be out of the Y2K sector. Bloodbath everywhere. Up until August, when I was at home unemployed for one month after my contract job terminated, I made 125% for the year, and my biggest gains were from Y2K - ALYD and CBSL were two big ones. Then I got careless and made a couple of bad moves and I am only up 70% for the year now. I hope I can recoup another 30% between now and the end of the year to meet my 100% yearly goal.
