Thanks - need to think about this. Although the textbook definitions of inflation and deflation are related to money supply, as stated by another poster, I believe it is the expected direction of future price changes that drives the gold market; i.e. price inflation and price deflation. We haven't yet recognized price deflation (it's here), and we won't see inflation until it's well upon us. This is when gold spikes - 18 to 24 months from now?
