In some cases the weak link among us defines our level of integrity and when we complain of an offense, the offense has power over any defensive response, except when the offending comment can be dispelled, which in this case it will not be. When expressing offense increases the likelyhood of repetition you are legitimizing and strengthening the effects of it's use. Obviously the more response it is getting the more power to offend it acquires. When a remark is not taken serious it has no power at all, no legitimacy except in exposing the silliness or immaturity of the one using it. I can think of ten more redundant ways to make that point if you want me to, but notice I did not have to draw attention to the specific term to make my point.
