Not sure why anyone would think the GLD ETF is designed to provide one access to the gold held by the ETF. The purpose is not to provide owners of shares access to gold, but to track the pog.

Others have thrown so much sand and mud into the eyes of those interested in precious metals that they rob them with high commissions while pretending to protect them by informing them that an ETF is a diabolical invention designed to cheat them.<g>

C4T, I agree. My problem with any commodity based ETF, beside what you have mentioned, is that you can only participate during stock market hours. That is, if you have a significant move in say, the POG overnight, it can fade before the stock market opens, and you miss your chance to take profits. Same with Silver, Oil, Currency etc.
I have experienced this exactly, with the Canadian listed Horizon Beta-Pro double leveraged products. A total mugs game, IMO.
