Actually yes, corporations did become better at foiling labor, but that wasn't the major reason. It was mostly supply and demand. A bunch of stuff happened:

*illegal immigration increased, so more supply of labor
*a lot of automation was implemented, decreasing the demand for labor
*we moved from a manufacturing economy to a service economy, decreasing the demand for semi-skilled labor

I could probably go on but it's Friday evening, I have to walk my dog and go to a dinner party, and don't feel much like thinking.

But when Reagan broke the ATC strike, followed closely by CAT busting their workers strike, the writing was on the wall. The balance of power had already changed, and those actions made management see the light (as well as the unions).
