Good piece.

And it's the last line that seems to be the big mystery going forward. It's been discussed here regularly: inflation or deflation? Pain, certainly, but in what color wrapping?

Despite a deflationary bias today, most insiders see inflation and spiking interest rates as the risk going forward, probably in early 2010 depending on how fast things start moving.

It seems as if the government is downplaying the seriousness of the situation a bit while they work to find a way forward.

It doesn't seem like that to me at all. If anything I think its the opposite, you have politicians and officials talking about depressions, and how urgent massive (even by federal government standards) spending is needed to stop one.
