I had an interesting talk with a young man from Brazil the other night on Second Life who pointed out that it was difficult to talk to Americans about programs because they have a very kneejerk reaction to any implication of socialism and are unable to see that some societal problems may be best addressed by a more socialized approach.

Perhaps it's because we staged a cold war against those who subscribed to the notion of "from each according to his ability; to each according to his needs" and Brazil didn't.

It seems to me that when something smacks of socialism we should automatically pause and consider carefully if that's where we want to go. If we do, then fine, but let's not just slide into it.
