Whenever Bush tried to crack down on employing illegals or toughen the rules, he got a lot of push back from Republican business owners through their lobbyists and congressional representation; enough to derail his immigration reform plans. Then there is the anti-legalization wing among Republicans that would have not have tolerated any kind of guest worker and/or amnesty problem. The irony is, once you take away the incentive for illegal border crossings, the border should be much easier to police. Imagine all the illegals who would be crossing through the El Paso border post as guest workers instead of running across the Rio Grande somewhere downstream. You are absolutely right that illegal immigration worked so long because the major players all benefited. Since that equation is unlikely to change, regulating and normalizing the existing illegal trade is the sensible way to go. Most likely, that's what we will see from this Congress and White House in a year or two.

Look, I agree with you. It's why I buy my produce from people I know- who don't work with illegals. But it's more expensive. I buy almost no produce from outside the country either- because I care, and have always cared, that my food is produced here where there are standards for food that I trust more than the standards elsewhere. We could make sure employers verify, but the big money interests (republican and democrat) don't want that, and the farmers sure as hell don't want that- and not everyone is as will as I am to pay more for produce picked by Americans.
