Maybe and eventually the various items would have been thought of.

We would have had electric lights someday too. And cars. And gas stations. Heck, eventually someone had to think of the paper clip and duct tape as well.

All in its time, I guess.

Always used to crack me up watching AFARTS, your military dollars at work, spots where they'd highlight DOD inventions and their civilian uses....

The problem is, as in the case of VCRs, the Gov't may invent something really cool but as soon as they do, it's classified. Of course, as in the case of VCRs, they didn't declassify it until the Japanese had invented something along the same lines but by then it's too late. Any edge we would have had in the VCR market was killed.......
