On anecdotal side, I went to Tech Fair at MIT today. They had only about 1/2 usual number of companies. Still a lot of defense contractor presence. The companies that came are mostly hiring (although it was not a job fair, so this is even more anecdotal), but then some of them have already fired people (or are actively firing). So you can see both good (still hiring) and bad (very few companies and significant percentage in defense industry) in this.

In MA startup scene and healthcare scene is still very active and possibly growing. But that's possibly few bright sparks in the gloomy night...
