Neocons are willing to avoid thinking about the welfare state because they want to spend BILLIONS on crap I do not want.

That reason I can understand. I had the impression, though, that you were damning them for their insufficient commitment to the welfare state.

"I shall, to begin with, assume that the welfare state is with us, for better or worse, and that conservatives should try to make it better rather than worse..."

I have trouble finding anything "alarmingly awful" about that. (Other than supporting the welfare state, that is. <g>)
