Their feelings are hurt. They managed to play the media like a fiddle during the 2000 and 2004 elections. However, the press, despite being a slow learner, eventually came to realize that they were actually hurting themselves by allowing that and didn't play ball this time.

So the wingnuts are feeling jilted.

That doesn't sound like the action of a "strong president," as you claimed Obama is. That sounds like the action of a president who wants to "wash his hands" of the whole thing.
