He always talks about liberal/conservative only. And he tends to identify anyone that doesn't fit his particular brand of conservative as liberal. But, he also pretends that anyone who labels themselves as conservative is his brand. So he takes any indication that those with a conservative bend are like him and imagines he is the majority. Granted, it seems convoluted and delusional, but this is his announced viewpoint.

I'm sorry dude, but if you think "the rest of the country" sees Friedman as anything other than a liberal, it is you with the screwed up political spectrum. The guy is a FLAMING liberal in every sense of the word. As is Chris Hitchens. It just happens they're the only really intelligent liberals who really understand the issues in the ME and thus support the war. So, since they support the war you think they aren't liberals. Smart liberals understand that sometimes wars solve problems.
