Reagan was a charming guy and things started to get a lot better during his term, although that nasty 10% unemployment hung around for quite a while. It would have been hard for things NOT to get better after Volcker had jacked up interest rates to over 20% and squeezed the bejeezus out of the economy.

I think the BIG MYTH for Reagan was that he had somehow ended the Cold War by throwing money down the "$1000 dollar toilet" and hitting the Kremlin with the "$1000 dollar hammer".

People don't seem to realize that if a "ringer" named Gorbachev hadn't gotten to the top over there the "cold war" would have gotten nothing but colder during Reagan's term.

Not only in fiscal policy did Reagan take the Country down the wrong path (remember Cheney saying deficits don't matter), but also in foreign policy. Morons like Bush thought that Reagan's calling the USSR names was the key to his success (evil empire), so he figured that if he just called Iran, Iraq and North Korea names it would all work out well for him too.
