Rethinking my comment:

<However, when a vendor implements a protocol like PPP over ATM on the non Telco side of one modem and the other modem has ethernet on the non Telco side there will be problems.>

On second thought, I guess it depends if LAN data is encapsulated in ADSL or translated into ADSL. If translated, it may not be an issue. If encapsulated it may be a problem.

Anybody know for sure ?

Thanks in advance,
Andy

[Interoperability]

<<<As far as ANSI ADSL and ATM on the same chip, I hope to see the standards committee and the ADSL Forum to have some say and get involved to promote interoperability. This way TI, MOT, ALA, ADI, etc can all be compatable.>>>

Isn't this what the Motorola announcement alluded to? I'd repost but I'm off for coffee.

I take heart when I hear one of my broker buddies chuckle. He thinks it's "cool" when the stock goes down because, in is words, "How often do you get a chance to know what's going on before everyone else?" He's referring to the TI chip and GTE/MSFT progress. He looks at the dips like a kid in a candy store. [One of his other favorites is 8X8]

Cheers!

Pat

>>I would like to see Amati modems fully interoperate with Alcatel modems. <<

So would we all, but it isn't as straightforward as you imply. The new DMTstandard is intended to address interoperability, and I understand the first chips which implement it will be the 3.0 release from Alcatel (first silicon late this year)-current release is 2.2, I think. So if you want Amati/Alcatel (or Hayes) interoperability, either both modems have to be running the new Alcatel chip, or Amati has to wait until one of its current silicon suppliers has implemented the new standard.

BTW, I think Hal is right on your later point-if you want to interface with a WAN ATM backbone (a very good idea), you would do that as ATM over ADSL. There's no encapsulation or translation (unless you mean the segmenting and reassembly of the data into ATM cells).
