I have heard the case made that vietnam was a success in some ways. Not the winger myth that we would have won if only the press, the resistance etc hadnt happened. thats bunk. However when the USSR fell apart, some of their intel suggested they were amazed at the steadfastness of the US in vietnam and although they predicted the carter period suggested they expected a reaction to that and an even stronger US. In short they expected the US to bug out of vietnam like the french but we are cut from a different cloth for better or worse. Its fascinating to look at all the different angles. Maybe that war led to a more free china and vietnam as in reality bites.
So with iraq, i think we actually have succeeded. I cant predict what will happen fifty years ago, but its good ssddam is gone and if our relations improve with shiaa iran, they will stay good with iraq too. I think the iraqis heard you loud and clear about warring ethnicities and decided churchills cobbled together mess is better than the alternative. You go with the mess you got. Rummy said that, no?
