By the time I broke down and said I can't continue to live this way I was in constant agony. I'm talking 8 on a good day and 10 more often then I care to remember. There was no position I could get in that alleviated the pain. I was driven to the hospital for my surgery at 2 in the afternoon. I laid in the back seat in the fetal position. At check in I laid on the floor in the fetal position with them not wanting to give me anything pre surgery. They said I would be in the hospital 2/3 days. I said my Dr said I can leave tomorrow if I feel like it. The nurse smiled and said well you won't feel like it.

Post surgery in my room I laid there thinking I'd died and gone to heaven. When the nurse came in to check me I asked her if I was on any medication and she said you have to operate the pump and if you haven't then no. I knew then I was in heaven. About 10 that night I rang and said I want to go to the bathroom and she brought me a urinal and I said no I want to go to the bathroom. She looked at my chart and said well it says to get you up at midnight to walk so I guess we can do that now. By the time she finished saying that I was half way to the bathroom and could have done it skipping. I surprised her I was so quick:)

When my Dr came in at 9am to check on me I was dressed and sitting in a chair along side the bed. He laughed and said does this mean your going home today and I said yep. He looked at my chart and said no problem, check him out. Gave me a prescription for a pain killer and an antibiotic. I filled the anti but didn't even bother with the pain pills. He told me to walk as much as I wanted and I hadn't been able to in so long due to pain that I had the wife drop me off a half mile from home and walked it happy as a kid in the candy store. At 6 weeks I went to my one and only therapy session and had normal range of movement and normal strength. They said good job, no sense coming back. Been happy with my back ever since.

The woman who sold me my Z-Coil shoes was a retired flight attendant who slipped on a wet floor at SEATAC. She said the shoes helped her a lot, and I was convinced.

One consequence was that I wanted to go walking a lot more after I got them. I wear mine all the time, and it does make lower back pain more tolerable.

For everyone's information!

A friend's neighbor, and good friend suffered terribly from anemia. About 3 months ago she had a horrible bout. Her boyfriend was so concerned he took her to the emergency room. She was made to wait 5 hours before she was seen, and in such poor shape she ended up dying. (she was 31)

The family was told if she had gone to the emergency room by ambulance or via an emt team she would have been seen immediately, and might have lived.

Moral of the story.........always, always, always call 911 in an emergency.

It might save you or your loved one's life.
