I did *not* say that the 'proto-elitist' was drinking "Napoleon Brandy, and multi-thousand dollar bottles of French Bordeaux".

(I said "bottled water" for the proto-elitist.)

I have no doubt that those other items mostly fall in the preserve of the full-fledged elitists. :-)

When did said person buy the hypothetical valuable bordeaux. I have drank very valuable bordeaux that was bought very reasonably due to timing of the buy.

For instance in 1972 the British government put currency restrictions on which prohibited most bordeaux futures contracts from being honored. There were some really great buys on 1970 Bordeaux in the US.

For instance this bottle may well have been bought for a couple hundred dollars initially:
