"In 3 months, AOL gained 270,000 subs.
In 3 months, Compuserve lost 1,235,000 subs."

I don't trust these reports for accuracy in large part due to the
lack of a definition for "subs".

In this case, the situation is made more murky by the fact that
the 5.3 to 5.4 million subs formerly attributed to CSRV included
almost 2.5 million subs to NiftyServe which is almost irrelevant
to the bottom line of CSRV/AOL if indeed AOL did get that contract
from CSRV as part of the deal. Also CSRV has 300,000 SPRYNET subscribers. Only 1.5 million of the 5.3-5.4 were domestic online
subscribers. I can't imagine that so many of them defected in three
months.
