It isn't even pejorative of people at all. He said the country was filthy. hmmm... well you don't drink the water.. I know that. Now if he said 95% of the people were dull and ignorant, that is a trick. They are everywhere. You shouldn't ban people because of an opinion. Particularly a travel opinion. It is like saying the hotel desperado is a dump. So? I think drivers in Manitoba should need permits to be let out on weekends. If you don't think so, just drive a Ryder truck through their province. Criticising drivers in Montreal does not mean you have to burn the red white and blue on DeGaulles birthday. This thread is a tad too sensitive. I know people put me on ignore from time to time. I think they are trying to train me. Well that is fine. I decided a long time ago, in a manner of rationalization not to become a political animal, or play people's games. I can turn the tables on them. If they are so smart why ain't they rich, and why don't they take my advice to get richer? I don't have to prove it to them. I figure if there were THAT smart they would know my advice was good. So how do I know it is? Another story, but I regress. CDN mining newsletter was not what I refer to. It was good, but any idiot can make money in a bull market on mining plays. Even people who follow John Kaiser. :) Aside but slightly relevant. only those who need be offended should take offense. Let me say it rather like Mordecai. There is no need for anyone to feel uninsulted!--> If I were not such a wimp I would have 350 ignores and perhaps 20 recommends. But I am a whipped pup. I shrink from intellectual honesty and follow the common herd. I post middle of the road stuff, and I get people putting me on ignore and for the life of me I cannot fathom why! I guess it is because they did not understand my method of argument or my intent. Or perhaps they are just too sensitive. Telling people it is a bad idea to invest in Columbia because there (were to be fair) 3600 kidnappings a year there.. is NOT anti latin American. Sorry. bzzzzt. You just don't get it. Think deeper folks. Deep. If I was really anti Latin American I would not talk about them at all. That would be the best revenge. BTW as a side shot against people who vote democrat, commie, liberal or soshialist, (many fine people do) it was not a nice liberal guy who reduced the kidnappings in Columbia to 800 a year, but a right wing "asshole" that get ready for this, that George Bush liked! Yes, the only three people that cured LA states from rampant lawlessness and anarchic disarray were right wing assholes. Their brilliant soshialist comrades, often of lofty degree and impressive speech making, with the heart of the people in their mouth, failed miserably time and again at social and economic engineering. Why? I don't think it was because the were in secret league with revolutionaries and narcos. Or they were brain dead. Or monetary pollyannas. It is just that trying to reason with some people forgets a basic fact. He does not have to agree with you just because you are the font of all wisdom and you really have his interests at heart. He wants to be the boss and you are in the way. That and the only person who can run an economy is a person who is deathly afraid of losing the first cent he ever made. People who want the poor to be better off rarely can do it. They are like the fabled three ducklingsg in the Unca Scrooge comic book who invent a replicator that can turn out dollar bills, and they figure giving money to all the people is the way to wealth and happiness. It is a hard study to come up with an answer. Since knee jerk is all you get knee jerking to the cautious usually does best. This worries me about Obama. I can see why he is closing down gitmo. Why jail 50,000 people when the other 800 million just get worked up over it. The only reason they put them all in jail was because they didn't know which 50 ones to shoot. On the other hand I know Iraq was not a hot bed of Islamic fundamentalism. Sadaam had all those guys buried alive or in the deepest darkest dungeons. So who did they put in Gitmo? But I worry about appeasement and the soft approach sometimes. It is to be preferred but .... I do notice something though, and I don't mean this as a heartfelt criticism of political leanings. ( a complete lie) but those people who are most outraged by opinion and plump the most for banning speech, posters etc, are never the right wing bigots or rarely. They are mostly I have found people who have the left or liberal persuasion. I have come right out and said, "all liberals/democrats are idiots" etc.. To be frank I should never say things like that. Ralphie gets most of the carping opinion from others because he flames and flames. This is bad technique of persuasion. In this he fails abjectly. His consistent carping which I believe he sees as righteous indignation repeated to reach the dullest mind, really turns off people who might otherwise agree with him if he were craftier about point out his views. He does do some things that people don't catch. He flames out on the edge like vicious paranoid, which I don't believe he is. Be may be part conspiratorialist, but I believe he knows some sort of thing is going on here and there and he is trolling. He cannot be as stupid as people make him out to be. In other words he is like a Jesuit. He is not playing his hand with cards face up. Maybe one or two cards missing, but he doesn't care. The game he plays does not need a full deck. He figures you cheat anyway. I once was passionate about lots of ideals, and played a certain side of things on the net. I was outraged often by clearly bad plays that were old time paper hanging or totally unrealistic plays. On the other hand the people were trying something. Like a NWT cobalt play that I skewered as totally naive. Maybe it was. But the people there would bait me to attack them. Man that was stupid. I should have continued on. Play the sheep and stay sheepish. There is something about 200 ignores that tells me he is playing the thing. Obsessed no doubt but playing. And honestly for the most part speaking his mind. He backs into getting some people to go for it. And that is where he lives. On the edge and collecting. Les Terroirists So here is an interesting story. Everybody knows how French people in Quebec can really all speak perfect english and won't give Anglais people the time of day if they were giving away free 50's with green stamps. Also they don't give two hoots and a holler what any anglais thinks about the cold shoulder in la belle. I was in Rouyin the other year, finding my way around. Rouyn has a maze system of streets that go every which way without rhyme or reason. I had looked for the street and number for about an hour and finally walked into a local restaurant, where in the worst french I tried to make it understood that I needed a glass of wine. j'ai besoin du vin I think I put it. First time I had laid eyes on the place. They delivered this house white which was the worst rotgut I had ever tasted and the waitress and staff were not overly cordial. Not rude you understand but in no manner deferential or solicitous as you expect service people to be. I said as I left in a friendly way to the small group at the bar, that the wine was a bit off, and it was strange in quebec that you could not get better wines generally. I mentioned that in Ontario you could get the AOC Premier Cru wines easily, (not that easily! At Hys I don't think they know what a AOC PGC is!) but they were hard to find in Quebec. All in English, mostly to blank looks no hostility. So I asked also how to find my way to so and so at such and such address. Could I get directions? About ten people turned around and looked at me as if in amazement. I felt that Stanley had landed in the Jungle and asked about a white doctor of natives who had all been cured of deathly illness at his Hospital. Immediately several people and the waitress offered directions, mostly in English, but often stopping for to expliquer and look at a friend for the english phrase. One started to draw a map. I had suddenly a dozen reliable guides. A voice came up with a strong fr. accent. "It's easier I drive you there." Totally sincere. Nice person. I did not suspect a thing. I was amazed and at first refused as it was a huge imposition for me to even say I could use the ride. No problem. He gets his car, a late model brougham and he drives me to the address. I ask him why he did that sort of thing. He said he didn't mind at all. He was a friend of the guy who owned the restaurant. Of course its not bad advertising too. but.. He didn't mind doing a turn for a guy now and then. slow night. I know some people would suspect differing motives for him, etc.. but I was completely sure his motives were to solve a problem for a person in some way who needed it, and not to do anything else. It was a gesture, no compensation of any kind. No ulterior motive than the friendship of mankind. I referred to fr. english relations in a roundabout way and wondered aloud how many english restaurant owners would do the same thing in opposite cirumstances. Not a whole hell of a lot. I have run into maddening attitudes by fr. people. you just could not understand. Some right rude, did not abide les anglais and told you so. strange as few would be that way to a quebecois to his face in this province. never I found. But the complete opposite to such a degree as you will amaze you exists often as well. They're hiding in these fields. EC<:-}
