<Regimes like that rarely last for long>

I'd have to disagree - that on average regimes that espouse harsh views like that last for 100's if not 1000's of years. What little democracy we have pried away from the ruling classes remains fragile. There is always someone who would take it away in the blink of an eye, and even here in the US, it has happened numerous times to various subgroups where the law giveth only to taketh away.

I remind folks that the model of fascism in the natural world is the lowly but remarkable ant. Ant culture of "all for one, one for all" and "ants uber alles" is remarkably stable. There are regrettably few examples of egalitarian society in nature. Crows and elephants, bonobos, and a few others. Even within these species their are rather harsh social pecking orders and other behaviors that we'd not want to see in our lives.

I'm proud of what our country has achieved and that we survived the Unitary Presidency of Bush43. That was a close call, IMO. It was remarkable that he did not issue blanket pardons to his cronies - whatever his motivation, one of the few things for which I think he earned "Well done!"
