Your assumption is this is his only wrong doing. Usually people who cheat are not limited to one transgression. This is most probably just the only one he got called on. Love the man if you like but I think you worship false gods.

He has served the people well throughout a long career. This minor tax transgression pales in comparison with all the scoundrels walking around free and enjoying their bonuses.

You're comparing his tax payment failures with unprosecuted criminal activity of others; false comparison, but I wouldn't want them as my HHS Secretary either. No one is suggesting that Daschle be prosecuted while guys like Madoff or Thain walk.

Obviously, you must be really rich to think that omitting $140,000 in taxes is minor. Many American's wont make that much money in the next 4 years combined. (myself included) I don't disagree that there are bigger fish in the pond but he definitely is not a minnow.
