JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Underground mining at Pamodzi Gold’ Free State operations had been stopped on Wednesday, after the municipality cut water supplies, owing to a late payment.

Spokesperson Bongi Radebe said that Shaft 1 and Shaft 2 had been closed to underground operations, owing to the lack of access to fresh water and sanitation.

She noted that the company had been unable to pay some of its operating expenses owing to the lower-than-expected production figures for January.

Radebe said that production at the South African mine would be affected, but was unable say how many ounces would be lost. The mine was expected to be in full operation on Thursday.

Radebe told Mining Weekly Online that the shaft closures were part of Pamodzi’s operating procedure to ensure the health and safety of its workers.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) stated that over 2 000 workers had not reported to work on Wednesday.

NUM also claimed that Pamodzi had been unable to fully pay 112 employees in January. However, Radebe noted that this situation had already been rectified.
