Doesn't look much like a description of "plunging" would be justified... certainly not when compared with Presidential histories.

Looks more like a normal (par for the historical course) post-election and getting-down-to-work poll decline to more normal levels.

Actually having to govern normally causes such tightening

By the way, I believe that the polls you chose are quite consistent with the Real Clear Politics & FOX reported polls:

RCP Poll:

Obama: Favorable/Unfavorable

RCP Average: +58.2% Details
Favorable 73.6%
Unfavorable 15.4%

Generic Congressional Vote

RCP Average: Democrats +9.0% Details
Democrats 47.6%
Republicans 38.6%

Peter, In the gallup poll - Obama approval is 65% and disapproval is only 20% - Hardly plunging!

Obama's disapproval rating is going up. Now Rasmussen (2/11-2/13)has him with 39% disapproval. His job approval is statistically the same after the massive fall resulting from exposing Porkulus: Democracy Corps (2/9-2/10) has him at 57% approval.
