Actually, the concept was first posited (so far as I know) by the late Dr. John Martin, who was quoted in "Wired" magazine saying, "give me a tanker full of iron, and I'll give you an ice age"..

All the research occurring now is based upon his pioneering work.

Also, one of the reasons I prefer R&D into this field is that we also face the problem of depleted fisheries and disruption of the marine food chain. Thus, it seems that increasing phytoplankton would have a positive impact on both CO2 levels, as well as marine life.

And I'm a man who likes his Sushi.. ;0)
