constant theme of helping those who were hurt by the last decade of economic policies

That's true. But what (imo) is bothering some people is that they expected the changes to occur through normal procedures- debate, discussion, committee, specific issues addressed and voted on individually. Rolling it all into one giant ball that bypasses discussion and includes a great many things that may be hot buttons or have a borderline connection to "stimulus" (and yes, I have no idea anymore what it means), coupled with the pressure of the MUST DO IT NOW OR WE DIE! approach gets me nervous. It's too reminiscent of the mushroom cloud.

As Obama said repeatedly this week, the old formula of cutting this tax or that tax and expecting sustainable prosperity for all has clearly not worked.

Any formula of "government does X, and we get sustainable prosperity" is likely to be unreliable. People looking to any sort of government action (even the action of eliminating or reducing certain actions), as an easy shortcut to avoiding economic problems are likely to be disappointed.
