As longnshort correctly noted, "b" would apply if the fielder landed on his feet in dead ball territory. Once he falls down, the ball is dead. BTW, a player can leap or fall into a dead ball area after making a play, like the stands, but can only not make a play that begins with him standing in it.

The part about falling or standing I didn't know either until I ran across it. I'm assuming, based on Jeter's famous catch in the stands, that you are not counted as "fallen" if there are fans there that are between you and the ground. Unlike offensive players who are automatically out if aided by their coach (e.g. picked up if they fall rounding third while the ball is live), I guess fans can help all they want. In fact, I do know that it's perfectly legal for a fan to reach into a player's glove and dislodge a ball so that no catch is made.
