Australian Customs has foiled a Melbourne man's attempt to strap smuggle two live pigeons to his legs and smuggle them from Dubai.

Customs officers took the 23-year-old aside while examining his luggage at Melbourne Airport on Sunday and found he was wearing tights with a live pigeon concealed in each leg.

He was also carrying two bird eggs, plant seeds and had several undeclared eggplants in his luggage.

A Customs spokeswoman says she expects the man to be charged by the quarantine agency.

The maximum penalty for wildlife smuggling offences is 10 years imprisonment and/or a $110,000 fine.
