President Obama has a difficult decision. Do nothing and the situation will no doubt get much worse or try to do something to make it better.

I believe that the BIG DIFFERENCE we have seen (over the past 48 years of the Presidency switching between GOP and Dem... with the clear example it shows of the federal deficit being reduced more when there are Dem Presidents sitting in the White House... and the federal deficit being *increased* when their are Republicans holding the office) likely is a 'secondary' effect, and is related to the fact that the American economy has GROWN FASTER under most of those Dem. Presidents.

A rising tide lifts all boats --- even Uncle Sam's boat.

When the economy GROWS FASTER, GNP increases at a faster rate, then federal tax revenues also rise and the need for federal borrowing is reduced.

It is likely this effect that has resulted in the clear historical trend we see of the real federal deficit (measured as a percentage of GNP) FALLING under the typical Dem. Presidency... (and rising under the converse).
