Olfactory paranoia is a problem.

The scents I pick up, like you, are often gas, electrical or mechanical and you never know what's wrong and where the problem is located.

I've often told people of problems in their homes regarding gas, exhaust, molds and excessive petrochemicals. Almost all of them ignore it. One family used a small utility room for PT for their disabled daughter. I smelled the water heater spilling into the room. The hubby went out for a CO detector and found that they were being poisoned every time they entered the room.

In my own home I have 4 CO detectors and my nose for protection.
