We would not wish a return to those times!

I don't wish to overstate or understate the global warming case, but sufficient to say that the human race can and does have a big effect on the planet, we need to be watchful at least of what we do.

We have almost sucked the oceans dry of most fish species, and have clear cut most forests off the planets surface over the last few hundred years by way of examples.

There is also very real threats posed by a range of pollutants we push into the atmosphere, including CFC's.

Sufficient to say, I believe our environment needs all the care we can give it, and it is worth heavy investment.
