The point is they aren't a necessity... if the average size of new homes built for a family of 4 goes down by 50% over the next 20 years IMHO the "standard of living" hasn't dropped at all assuming the same number (or % or whatever) of people have homes... but that wouldn't be what the stats show. Same with large vehicles... if the same number of people own a car, has the standard of living dropped because everyone realizes Escalades and Hummers don't make sense with higher fuel and pollution costs?

In fact, the upkeep, fuel and heating/air costs could actually make smaller homes/cars an increase in the standard.

Now, as to my personal viewpoint... yes McMansions and Hummers are quite stupid... as people are rapidly finding out. LOL
